Tuščak

Tuščak is a twin-peaked mountain ridge in the Samobor Hills, in the eastern part of the Žumberak range near Samobor, Croatia. It rises between the village of Stojdraga on the Žumberak road and the Bregana river, with its highest point reaching 602 metres above sea level. Although the summit itself is forested and offers limited views, Tuščak draws hikers with its distinctive cone-shaped profile and the ruins of a medieval fortress sitting on its lower peak.

What can you see at Tuščak?

The main attraction is Gradina Tuščak, the ruins of a hilltop fortress on the lower of the two peaks, at roughly 585 metres. It is one of four medieval strongholds within Žumberak – Samobor Hills Nature Park, alongside Okić, Lipovac, and the old town of Žumberak. The fortress is believed to have been built at the turn of the 12th and 13th centuries, but had already fallen into ruin by the 14th century.

Two towers survive, at least in outline: one was never fully completed or inhabited, while the other served as a residence. From one side of the ruins, a panoramic view opens toward Stojdraga, while the remaining slopes are covered in dense forest. The smaller, harder-to-spot tower, tucked among the trees, has been turned into a resting spot, fitted with wooden benches and two tables that shelter hikers from the wind. The trail's official checkpoint marker sits on the foundations of this lower tower.

Hikers aiming for Tuščak's true summit (602 m) need to continue roughly 15 more minutes past the fortress. There is no checkpoint marker at the top, and views are limited by the surrounding woodland — even so, the mountain's cone-like silhouette, visible from the wider area, remains one of the recognisable landmarks of the Samobor Hills.

Tuščak forms one of the checkpoints (KT 17) on the Samobor Circular Trail (Samoborska obilaznica), a loop hiking route running through the entire Samobor Hills, maintained in part by the Japetić Mountaineering Society. Climbing Tuščak is typically part of longer routes linking other points across the park, so it's worth planning a visit that also takes in nearby hilltop ruins such as Okić or Žumberak.

When is the best time to visit?

Thanks to its forested terrain and moderate elevation, Tuščak is accessible more or less year-round, though spring and autumn offer the most comfortable conditions for longer hikes. In summer, bring your own water, since most of the trail runs through woodland without natural sources along the way. In winter, when snow conditions allow, the area also draws snowshoe hikers.
