Trakošćan Lake

Lake Trakošćan sits in Šinkovica Šaška, in Croatia's Zagorje region, right beneath the walls of Trakošćan Castle. It's the kind of spot that looks almost staged — calm water, wooded hillsides, and a medieval tower reflected on the surface.

Is the lake natural?

No — it's an artificial reservoir created in the 19th century. The Drašković family, who owned the castle at the time, wanted to give their estate a more romantic setting, so they dammed a small stream running through the valley below the fortress. The result was a lake roughly 1.5 kilometres long, covering about 17 hectares, with an average depth of just 2.5 metres.

How do you get there?

Trakošćan lies in northern Croatia, in Varaždin County, within the hilly Zagorje region known for its vineyards and scattered castles. It's easy to combine a visit with other stops in the area. Driving is the most practical option — the lake and castle sit a short distance from the main roads connecting Zagreb with the north of the country.

What can you do at the lake?

A walking path circles the entire lake, offering changing views of the castle from different angles as you go. A wooden jetty on the shore is where visitors rent pedal boats in summer, a popular way to spend an hour on the water with the neo-Gothic towers in the background. The lake also draws anglers, and its calm surface makes it a favourite spot for a quiet walk away from the crowds.

In summer the water can warm up to around 28°C, making it one of the warmer lakes in this part of Croatia. In winter, it freezes over for roughly three months, and the frozen surface surrounded by snow-covered hills creates an entirely different, equally striking scene.

When is the best time to visit?

Spring and summer are ideal for walking the lakeside path and renting a pedal boat, when the greenery around the castle is at its fullest. Autumn brings fewer crowds and colourful foliage that adds to the scenery. In winter, the frozen lake makes for an unusual but very photogenic sight, though pedal boating is obviously off the table.

The castle above the lake

Trakošćan Castle rises on a hill right above the water and is considered one of the best-preserved castles in Croatia. Its history goes back to the 13th century, but its current neo-Gothic look dates from a mid-19th-century renovation — the same period when the lake itself was created, giving the whole estate the romantic character that still draws visitors today. Inside, a museum displays the original furniture, portraits, and weapons of the Drašković family.
