Tovarnica

Tovarnica is a mountain peak in the Grad Trilj municipality, in the Dalmatian hinterland, marking the southeastern end of the Dinara-Kamešnica range. It rises to 1,285 metres and offers one of the lesser-known but rewarding hiking destinations behind Split.

Where is Tovarnica located?

The peak sits north of the village of Tijarica and southeast of Voštane, forming the natural southeastern terminus of the Dinara-Kamešnica chain. It is separated from neighbouring Kamešnica by the Međugorje valley. Nearby summits include Petrovrh (1,227 m), Glavica (1,143 m) and Trnovac (1,127 m). While most of the ridge lies on Croatian territory, its lower northeastern slopes cross into Bosnia and Herzegovina.

How do you get to the summit?

The classic approach starts in the village of Voštane, at 865 metres. A popular route runs from Voštane up to the Tovarnica summit and then descends toward the village of Grab. The climb itself takes around 2 hours, with the descent back to Voštane taking about an hour. Anyone planning a full day trip — including travel, a lunch stop and time to explore nearby sights — should set aside the better part of a day. The trail is rated easy and technically undemanding, making it a solid choice even for less experienced hikers. Even so, bring enough water and sturdy footwear, since the ground is rocky and exposed to strong summer sun.

Tovarnica's slopes have a distinctly Mediterranean character, closer in feel to nearby Svilaja than to the harsher, higher parts of Dinara. The terrain is gentle and rounded, with steep rock faces appearing only near the very summit. The northeastern side is covered in beech forest, while the southwestern slopes form a mosaic of oak, hornbeam and open pastureland — botanical surveys of the area have recorded roughly 420 plant species. From the ridge, hikers get views over the Sinj region and the surrounding plateaus, and on clear days the wind turbines on neighbouring hills are visible too. It's worth making a short detour to the Grab spring, one of the most attractive karst springs in the region, with historic water mills still standing beside it.
