Torrechiara Castle

Langhirano, Poland

About this place

Torrechiara Castle is a 15th-century castle near Langhirano, in the province of Parma in northern Italy. It stands on a terraced hill south of Parma, in a commanding position above the Parma River valley. Commissioned by Pier Maria II de' Rossi, the fourth count of San Secondo, it was built between 1448 and 1460, and it is now managed by the Polo Museale dell'Emilia Romagna, which has overseen it since 2015. It is a good place for a sightseeing stop with wide views and a sense of local history.

  • The castle’s hilltop setting makes the approach and the panorama over the Parma River valley a key part of the visit.
  • Its architecture reflects the influence of the House of Sforza castles, especially the Visconti-Sforza Castle, giving the fortress a distinct late-medieval character.
  • You can also trace the story of Pier Maria II de' Rossi and the castle’s construction period, 1448–1460, while exploring a site that has been under museum management since 2015.

For a visit here, it is worth wearing comfortable shoes, as the castle sits on a terraced hill and the surroundings are best enjoyed at an unhurried pace. Check the weather before you go, especially if you want to make the most of the views. This is a strong choice for travelers interested in castles, local history, and a scenic outing just outside Parma.
