About this place
Torre da Lagariça
Torre da Lagariça is a historic fortified manor in São Cipriano, in the municipality of Resende, northern Portugal. Wikidata lists it as a cultural heritage monument. It stands in a rugged yet charming landscape at roughly 41.060 N, 7.999 W. It is also known as Casa da Torre da Lagariça and as the literary model for the "Ilustre Casa de Ramires".
How did Torre da Lagariça come about?
In the 12th century a solitary military tower with a square plan was built here. It served as a watch point and also as a prison. Over time, living quarters were added around the tower and became the residence of the lords of Torre da Lagariça. In this way a stronghold turned into a manor house.
Who were the lords of Lagariça?
Gonçalo Martins Cochofel is thought to have been the first lord of Lagariça. In the early 16th century he married Briolanja Pinto, from the Pintos of Covelas. The Cochofel family is still linked to the place, as the property remains theirs.
Why does it matter to literature?
The writer Eça de Queiroz visited the manor, and it inspired his novel "A Ilustre Casa de Ramires" (The Illustrious House of Ramires). For lovers of Portuguese literature it is an intriguing stop in the region. Accounts of the novel point to this tower as the model for the house in the book.
Is it protected?
Yes. Casa da Torre da Lagariça has been classified as a Property of Public Interest (Imóvel de Interesse Público) since 19 September 1977.
What does the estate look like?
The house has about 700 square metres of usable floor area and 20 rooms. A quinta, a farm with cultivated fields and fruit trees, belongs to it. Together they form a manor-and-farm ensemble typical of northern Portugal, with the former tower at its heart.
Can you visit Torre da Lagariça?
It is private property of the Cochofel family. The exterior can be seen if you first request authorisation from the owners. Do not turn up unannounced or enter the grounds without permission. It is wise to contact the Resende municipal tourism office or the Rota do Românico organisation beforehand, as both describe the site in their materials.
