About this place
Tinnenpot is one of the best-known theatre venues in Ghent, standing at Tinnenpotstraat 21 right in the historic heart of the city. For more than twenty-five years it has worked both as a producing theatre, staging its own shows, and as a receptive house that opens its stages to outside musicians, dancers, actors and exhibition makers.
Where does the building come from?
The structure now occupied by the theatre has gone through several unexpected transformations. It began life as a storage facility belonging to a paper merchant named Timmermans. Over time the space was converted into a sports complex, and only later reshaped into the theatre venue it is today, now holding eight halls of varying size and character. Tinnenpot as an independent theatre company was founded in 2001, splitting off from the ARCA theatre at the moment ARCA merged with NTGent, under the artistic direction of Jo Decaluwe.
What is inside the venue?
Tinnenpot's programme runs across six main halls, each with a distinct atmosphere. The largest and most traditional is the Beckettzaal, a classic theatre auditorium seating 173 people. It stands in contrast to the much more intimate Bonbonnière, a cosy 69-seat hall styled after the 1940s, which offers a completely different mood from the main stage. The remaining halls are used flexibly depending on the type of event, hosting everything from theatre productions and concerts to dance performances and art exhibitions.
What role does Tinnenpot play in Ghent's cultural life?
For years Tinnenpot has served as an important cultural hub in the city, combining its own productions with an open-door policy toward independent artists looking for a stage or a creative workspace. The institution places strong emphasis on education, running pedagogical projects aimed at learners of different ages, treating theatre not only as a place to present art but also as a tool for cultural education. This has earned Tinnenpot a strong reputation both among local artists and among Ghent residents who attend its performances regularly.
What should visitors know before going?
The theatre sits in an easily reachable spot in central Ghent, close to other landmarks of the historic city centre, making it a convenient stop for anyone combining culture with a walk through the city's architectural history. The programme changes seasonally and spans everything from large theatrical productions to intimate music evenings and dance shows in the smaller halls.
