The Stone house

Fafe, Portugal

About this place

Casa do Penedo, also known as The Stone House, is an extraordinary home squeezed between enormous granite boulders in northern Portugal, on the border of the Fafe and Celorico de Basto municipalities. It is one of the most unusual sights in the Minho region and has long drawn curious travellers who want to see a house where the rock itself plays the lead role.

What is Casa do Penedo?

The Portuguese name roughly means "house of the boulder" or "house of the rock". The building was designed so that natural rock formations serve as its foundation, walls and ceiling. Descriptions commonly say four massive boulders form the structure, with people adding only what daily life requires: doors, windows and a roof. The stone is not hidden behind plaster or new masonry. It stays in plain view.

Reference sources classify it as an architectural monument located between Celorico de Basto and Fafe.

When and why was it built?

Work began in 1972 and lasted about two years, finishing in 1974. An engineer named Guimarães built it as a countryside holiday retreat for a local family. It was meant as a quiet getaway in the hills, not as a tourist stop.

Its odd looks soon caught the attention of passers-by. Visitors arrived in such numbers that the owners no longer felt at ease and moved elsewhere. Today the interior houses a small museum of relics and photographs telling the story of the house.

What is inside?

The interior is rustic and raw. Furniture, stairs and railings are made from logs, which suits the rough surface of the stone. Rock is everywhere, giving the rooms a cave-like feel while still being a proper house. Photos of the exterior are often compared to scenes from The Flintstones, and the house is sometimes nicknamed the "Flintstones house".
