Teplá Abbey

Teplá Abbey

Teplá, Czechia

About this place

Teplá Abbey, in the town of Teplá in the Karlovy Vary Region of western Czechia, is a Premonstratensian monastery belonging to the Diocese of Plzeň. The complex is registered as a national cultural monument of the Czech Republic.

When was Teplá Abbey founded?

The abbey was founded in 1193 by Blessed Hroznata, a Czech nobleman who invited Premonstratensian canons from Strahov Monastery in Prague to establish the community. The Premonstratensians are canons regular living under the Rule of St. Augustine, combining communal prayer with pastoral work. Books formed part of monastic life almost from the outset, and the first documented mention of a dedicated space for storing manuscripts dates back to 1501, during the tenure of Abbot Sigismund.

What does the abbey look like today?

The monastery's present Baroque appearance dates to a major reconstruction carried out at the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries, attributed to an architect from the Dienzenhofer family — one of the leading architectural dynasties of Baroque Bohemia. The north wing, which today houses the library and museum, stands apart stylistically: it was built in Neo-Baroque style between 1902 and 1910, considerably later than the rest of the complex.

Why is the library significant?

The abbey library holds around 100,000 volumes, making it the largest monastic library collection in Bohemia and one of the oldest and most important historical libraries in the Czech Republic. Its holdings trace back to the founding of the community at the end of the 12th century, growing continuously over the centuries into a collection of considerable historical and cultural value.

What happened to the abbey in the 20th century?

Monastic life at Teplá was interrupted for decades before the Premonstratensians were able to return to the abbey in 1990. Since then, the complex has undergone gradual restoration. The library and museum themselves have a longer public history, though: they have been open to visitors under the care of heritage preservation authorities since 1958.
