About this place
The Saint Florian column in Bezdružice stands in the upper part of the town's main square, close to an old town well, in this small town in western Bohemia. Carved from sandstone in the first half of the 18th century, it counts among the better-preserved Baroque monuments in the region.
Why was the column erected?
An inscription on the pedestal states that local residents raised the column in 1732 in honor of St. Florian, seeking protection against fire. The timing was no coincidence: two years earlier, in 1730, a serious fire had struck Bezdružice. With most buildings still made of wood and firefighting means limited, townspeople turned to a public act of devotion meant to safeguard the whole community.
What does the monument actually look like?
The entire structure is carved from sandstone. The pedestal supporting the column rises to roughly two meters and carries dense decoration. Its front bears a relief of a seated Virgin Mary with the Christ Child reading at her feet, framed by palm branches woven into a wreath. Flanking the pedestal are two apostle figures: St. Peter, holding a book and keys, and St. Paul, shown with a book and his characteristic turban. Lower down, near the base, additional saints appear, including St. Wenceslas and St. John of Nepomuk.
Who stands at the very top?
Crowning the column is its main figure: an armored St. Florian holding a banner in his left hand. At his feet sits a small building resembling a mill. This detail follows traditional iconography, in which the saint extinguishes flames and shields buildings from fire — the reason he became the patron of firefighters and fire protection, a role that mattered deeply to a town that had recently lived through a disaster of exactly that kind.
Has the column always stood in this spot?
No. It originally stood elsewhere in town and was moved to its present location in 1844, to clear space for the construction of a new town hall. Since then it has remained in the upper part of the square, where it now serves as one of the recognizable landmarks of Bezdružice's town center.
Has the monument ever been restored?
Yes, it underwent conservation work twice in the second half of the 20th century, in 1964 and again in 1986. Those restorations helped preserve the carved details — the reliefs and the saints' figures — well enough that most of the original composition can still be read today.
