Where does the name come from and what is its history?

The theatre takes its name from the Count of Toreno, who in 1923 handed the building over to the townspeople so they could stage performances there. Architect Leopoldo Corujedo oversaw a historicist-style reconstruction, and the building formally opened in February 1927. From 1957 it was run as a joint-stock company, and for several decades it doubled as a cinema before film screenings ended in 1983. Years of decline followed until the town council took ownership through an expropriation process on 26 February 1993, clearing the way for a full restoration. That work finished in December 1998, and the theatre reopened to the public with an inaugural concert by tenor Joaquín Pixán.

What does the building look like?

Covering 655.70 square metres, the theatre is built in a neoclassical style typical of Asturian civic architecture from the 1920s. Its facade is split into two sections and crowned with a triangular pediment bearing a coat of arms. Visitors enter through a lowered-arch doorway with richly carved wooden panels, while the upper floor features a balcony framed by windows. Inside, the layout spans four levels, from a basement up to the second floor, with stalls seating on the ground floor and an amphitheatre and boxes above.

Following its restoration, the theatre seats 196 people. The stage measures 36.16 square metres and is backed by dressing rooms for performers and a technical area for lighting and rigging equipment.
