Teatro Renacimiento is a former theatre and cinema in Ferrol, standing in the historic A Madalena district, and today one of Galicia's most striking architectural ruins. When was the theatre built, and who designed it?

The building went up between 1917 and 1920, designed by architect Eduardo Rodríguez-Losada Rebellón, on the site of the earlier Circo Ferrolano (also known as Teatro Romea), which had shut down in 1915. The new theatre opened with a formal ceremony in August 1920.

For most of its working life it served a dual role as both a cinema and a stage venue, hosting film screenings alongside theatrical productions, variety shows and concerts. That flexibility made Renacimiento one of Ferrol's main cultural venues for decades.

What happened to it?

The theatre closed for good in 1989. Two years later, in 1991, a fire tore through the building, destroying the roof and gutting the interior. It has been decaying ever since - today only the facade and the outer walls remain standing, while the inside sits open to the elements. In February 2022, Teatro Renacimiento was added to the Red List (Lista Roja) kept by the Spanish heritage watchdog Hispania Nostra, over concerns that a collapsing facade and deteriorating walls put the building at genuine risk of disappearing entirely.

Yes. It holds Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC) status, Spain's highest level of heritage protection, registered under Galicia's cultural heritage law 5/2016. Despite that, it remains in private hands, and its condition has worried local residents and heritage advocates for years.
