How did a hospital courtyard become a theatre?

The story starts in the mid-19th century, when local residents began staging performances in the covered patio of the old Hospital de la Caridad. A stage was set up along one side of the courtyard, a large chandelier provided lighting, and building materials salvaged from the demolished nearby church of San Sebastián went into the construction. The result, first known as Teatro de la Caridad, worked much like a traditional Spanish corral de comedias — a theatre built around an open courtyard.

When did the hospital stop functioning here?

The hospital's activity on the site formally ended on 19 May 1889. From that point the building shifted definitively toward its life as a town theatre, though further building work continued well into the early 20th century.

The theatre takes its name from Antonio Diéguez Cruz, an actor born in Colmenar de Oreja in 1904 who performed at Madrid's Teatro de la Comedia. Diéguez went missing in Madrid during the earliest days of the Spanish Civil War in 1936. Naming the local stage after him kept the memory of a hometown performer who had made a career on one of the capital's leading stages.

How has the interior changed over time?

In the early 20th century the ceiling was raised to fit in a second tier of seating, and the interior was redecorated in a style drawing on designs by the set designer Ulpiano Checa, who also painted the crest above the proscenium opening.
