Why did Almendralejo need a theatre?

Between the mid-1800s and the early 1900s, the town's population roughly doubled and then doubled again, climbing from under 6,000 residents to over 12,000. Farming and trade were booming, and the town had already added several civic landmarks to match its new status: a bullring, the Círculo Mercantil business club, and the Obrero Extremeño workers' association. A proper theatre was the next logical step, giving the growing town a permanent home for stage performances and, before long, for the new medium of cinema.

Construction began in 1916, and the building opened to the public in April 1917. Its layout follows the "teatro a la italiana" model that dominated Spanish theatre design throughout the 19th century, with tiers of boxes wrapped around a central stalls area. The scale is striking: the distance between the ceiling and the stalls floor exceeds 15 metres, and the boxes rest on cast-iron columns beneath two amphitheatre levels. Painter Adelardo Covarsí handled the decorative work, covering the entrance hall and the grand salon, and inside the auditorium itself the ceiling, the proscenium arch, and the side walls.

What happened to the building over the following century?

During the 1970s, the theatre was converted for exclusive use as a cinema, a change that altered much of its original interior. That lasted until 2003, when a full restoration brought back the building's original look — boxes, proscenium and stalls arranged as they had been for the 1917 opening.
