Palafrugell Municipal Theatre

Teatre Municipal de Palafrugell (known locally as TMP, or TeMePé) is the main cultural venue of this Catalan town in Girona province, standing at Carrer de Santa Margarida, 1. Built inside a former cinema, it has served for more than two decades as the hub of Palafrugell's cultural life, hosting theatre, concerts, film screenings, conferences and exhibitions.

How did the theatre come about?

The building started out as Cinema Victòria. In 1985 the Palafrugell town council, then led by mayor Lluís Medir, bought the property for 25 million pesetas. The plan to convert the old cinema into a municipal theatre was approved by the council on 29 July 1988, and after the refurbishment works the venue reopened to the public on 7 May 1999 under its current name, Teatre Municipal de Palafrugell.

What does the building look like inside?

The main hall seats 470 people, split between 302 seats on the ground floor and 168 in the amphitheatre-style gallery above. Besides the auditorium, the building holds an exhibition room on the first floor and, on the second floor, an events hall shared with the town's cultural department offices. The stage is fitted for both live performance and film projection, with a cinema screen, a conference table, a display lectern for exhibitions and a full sound system.

The TMP functions as the backbone of Palafrugell's cultural programming.
