Thanks to its size and the depth of its stage, the theatre soon overtook the other venues in Alcoy and became the city's leading stage. A major renovation followed in 1944: the ceiling was raised, the pillars that had blocked sightlines were removed, the electrical wiring was replaced throughout, hot-air heating was installed, the seating area was enlarged with new chairs, and the lobby and lounge were refurbished.

For much of the twentieth century the building operated mainly as a cinema. It closed in 2000, after which the municipality of Alcoy took ownership. A complete rebuild followed, and the theatre reopened in 2007 fitted out with modern stage technology.
