Te Boelaarpark

Antwerpia, Belgium

About this place

Te Boelaarpark is one of Antwerp's city parks, spreading across 16 hectares in the Borgerhout district, between Gitschotellei and Arthur Matthyslaan. It is a green space geared strongly toward recreation, offering sports fields, open lawns, and a children's playground.

Where does the park's name come from?

The name "Te Boelaer" dates back to the Middle Ages. A homestead known as 't Goet Te Boelaer is already mentioned in 1385, and it gradually grew into a manor with a castle that served for centuries as a country residence for wealthy merchants and noble families. The name itself has a natural origin: "Boe" derives from "boek," meaning beech tree, while "laar" (or "lare") is an old word for a clearing or open space within a forest. Put together, the name literally describes a clearing among beech trees.

What happened to the old castle?

The estate's buildings suffered heavy damage during both world wars. The neoclassical Te Boelaer castle, built in the first half of the 19th century, was used for a time as a school, but it was ultimately demolished in 1979. A new school, built somewhat in the style of the old castle, later replaced it. Today, little trace of the former manor remains in the park's landscape — the site has been transformed into a typical urban green space, given over to the residents of Borgerhout for everyday leisure.

What can visitors do in Te Boelaarpark today?

The park functions as a local recreational hub. It features sports fields used both by organized groups and residents looking for a spot for spontaneous physical activity. The large open lawns are well suited for picnics, ball games, or simply relaxing outdoors. A playground caters to younger visitors, making the park an appealing destination for families living in this part of Antwerp.

Given its size and the variety of its facilities, Te Boelaarpark is an important part of the city's network of green spaces — combining historical roots (a medieval origin behind its name, a former noble residence) with the practical role of a modern urban park serving the needs of the Borgerhout district.
