Sveti Ivan

Žuljana, Croatia

About this place

Sveti Ivan is a 469-metre peak rising above the village of Žuljana at the southern tip of the Pelješac peninsula in Croatia. It's one of the more popular hiking destinations in this part of Dalmatia — the trail starts right in Žuljana and climbs through forest to a summit with sweeping views over the islands of Mljet, Lastovo and Korčula.

How do you get to the Sveti Ivan summit?

The starting point is the village of Žuljana, reachable by car — roughly 80 km from Dubrovnik and about 40 km from Korčula Old Town. The trail to Sveti Ivan begins near Vučine beach and climbs steadily through wooded slopes. The full there-and-back route covers about 10.6 km with roughly 490 metres of elevation gain, and it typically takes 3.5–4 hours to complete. It's rated a moderate hike — sturdy trekking shoes are recommended, since parts of the path are rocky and steep. Bring your own water, as there are no springs or shops along the way.

What will you see along the trail and from the top?

The first stretch follows the coastline toward Vučine beach, one of the more scenic coves near Žuljana, before the path turns inland and enters typical Mediterranean forest of pine and low maquis scrub. The higher you climb, the sparser the vegetation, opening up wider gaps between the trees with glimpses of the sea below. From the Sveti Ivan summit you get one of the widest panoramas on the whole Pelješac peninsula: the Žuljana bay directly below, the island of Mljet further south, Lastovo beyond it, and Korčula to the east. On clear days visibility stretches for dozens of kilometres, which makes the peak a popular spot for watching the sunset among locals and visitors alike.

When is the best time to hike it?

Because most of the trail offers little shade, early morning or late afternoon is the best time to go, especially in summer when temperatures on Pelješac can climb high. The most comfortable months for hiking are April–June and September–October, when it's cooler and the vegetation is still green. During peak summer (July–August), start before 9 a.m. to avoid the heat on the exposed sections of the trail.

What else is worth knowing about Žuljana?

Žuljana is a small fishing and harbour village on the southern side of Pelješac, home to around 200 residents. Locals make their living from agriculture, fishing and tourism — in season the village runs largely on visitors drawn by the beaches, diving spots, and hiking and cycling trails. Besides climbing Sveti Ivan, it's worth trying the local wine and home cooking at the small konobas near the harbour, and unwinding on Vučine beach or in the main bay after the descent.
