About this place
Švanda Theatre (Švandovo divadlo) stands among the oldest theatres in Prague still in operation today, located in Smíchov on the left bank of the Vltava River. The compact, stone building on what is now Štefánikova Street takes its name from Pavel Švanda ze Semčic the Elder, director of one of the most significant travelling theatre companies of the 19th century, who ceremoniously opened the venue on 1 October 1881. The building itself was designed by the Prague architect and builder Josef Záhorský.
Why has the theatre changed its name so many times?
Over nearly 130 years of existence, the stage has gone through repeated changes of name and identity. It has been known at various points as the Intimate Theatre, the Realist Theatre, the Zdeněk Nejedlý Realist Theatre, and Divadlo Labyrint. Each new name reflected a different artistic direction and a different era — from a modest touring stage, through phases of experimental theatre, to an institution with ambitions of becoming a cultural centre for the left bank of the Vltava. Only after these transformations did the building return to its historical name, Švandovo divadlo na Smíchově.
What survived from the original building?
After years of neglect, the building underwent a major reconstruction in the early 1990s and reopened on 9 January 1992 under the name Labyrint, an arts centre on the left bank of the Vltava. A more extensive renovation followed, and the theatre reopened again in December 2002, this time as a cultural venue built around a permanent, resident acting ensemble performing a repertory programme. These works preserved the building's 19th-century character while equipping it with the technical facilities needed for a modern repertory stage.
Where does it rank among Prague's theatres?
Švanda Theatre is considered the third oldest theatre in Prague, surpassed in age only by the Estates Theatre and the National Theatre. This standing highlights Smíchov's own long theatrical tradition, independent of the city centre across the river. For local residents, the theatre has served as a cultural landmark for well over a century, despite its many changes of name and artistic profile.
Where exactly is the theatre located?
The building stands on today's Štefánikova Street, historically recorded as Kinský Street — the name changed along with Prague's broader street renaming over the course of the 20th century. Its location in Smíchov, close to the left bank of the Vltava, makes it an easy stop while exploring this part of Prague, a district set apart from the most touristic core of the city yet well connected to it.
