About this place
Divadlo Kampa is a small, intimate theatre in Prague's Malá Strana district, tucked right next to the Kampa island park and the Čertovka canal, known for its unconventional programming and close-quarters atmosphere.
Where exactly is the theatre located?
The building sits within a complex belonging to the Czech Sokol organization (Česká obec sokolská), in Malá Strana, right next to the green space of Kampa park. The site has a long theatrical pedigree — the space already served as a performance venue back in the 19th century, though at times it also housed public water baths. Thanks to its proximity to the Vltava river and the calm, leafy Kampa island, an evening at the theatre here pairs naturally with a stroll through one of Prague's most picturesque corners.
What is the history behind this venue?
Before Divadlo Kampa existed in its current form, the building operated under several different names and management teams, including Malé Nosticovo divadlo, Divadlo Nablízko and Divadlo Čertovka. The present-day Divadlo Kampa was founded in 2010 by the civic association Paralela, led by Michaela Formanová and Klaudie Kovářová, which ran the stage until December 2013. Starting in January 2014, operations passed to the non-profit organization o.p.s. Divadlo Kampa, headed by director Iveta Dušková, and under this management the theatre operated in Malá Strana for the following decade. In 2024, the venue's activity moved to Divadlo Na Maninách in the Holešovice district — a significant shift in the theatre's history.
What can visitors see there?
Divadlo Kampa is a club-style stage that embraces a wide range of artistic projects, from stage adaptations of literary works to original directorial creations. Its programming has included productions associated with Divadlo Cylindr, such as adaptations of "Anna Karenina," "Babičky," "Dědeček Oge" and "Momo." The lineup blends reworked literary classics with more personal, author-driven theatrical projects, making the venue appealing both to fans of traditional drama and to audiences looking for something less conventional.
Who is this venue best suited for?
The theatre's intimate scale and its location away from Prague's busiest tourist routes make Divadlo Kampa particularly appealing to visitors who value close contact with the stage and a varied, adventurous repertoire. It's a good choice for anyone wanting to experience Prague theatre away from large, commercial productions, in favor of a more original take on classic and contemporary texts.
