Sućuraj lighthouse

Sućuraj Lighthouse stands on the eastern cape of the island of Hvar, right next to the village of Sućuraj in Croatia, at the point where the Hvar Channel narrows most sharply toward the Pelješac peninsula. It's a well-known landmark for sailors moving between Split and the southern Dalmatian islands.

How old is the lighthouse?

Navigation lights have marked this cape since the 19th century. As early as 1874, a makeshift light around 6 meters high was set up here on a wooden structure next to the chapel of St. Ante the Abbot. It wasn't until the early 20th century, between 1906 and 1908, that a permanent masonry lighthouse building went up — the same structure still standing today. The original wooden light and the adjoining chapel were less fortunate: both were destroyed during German bombing in 1943, during the Second World War.

The building is a modest, single-story structure with a tall attic space, laid out in an L-shaped floor plan with a square tower attached that houses the actual light. Yes. The light was automated in the 1990s, after which the resident lighthouse keeper who once lived on site was withdrawn. The building hasn't been left empty, though — part of the former keeper's living quarters has since been converted into an apartment rented out to tourists. It's a rare chance to spend the night inside a working lighthouse, with direct views over the sea and the channel between the islands.
