Strømtangen fyr

Fredrikstad, Norway

About this place

Strømtangen Lighthouse (Strømtangen fyr) stands on the island of Torgauten at the approach to Fredrikstad in south-eastern Norway. It is the oldest state-run lighthouse station in Østfold county, and today it is best known as an unusual place to stay beside the fjord.

How did Strømtangen Lighthouse begin?

The light was established in 1859 as a leading light, helping ships find their way into Fredrikstad. The station was built for a keeper's family, so daily life here followed the weather, the shipping traffic and the upkeep of the equipment. Until 1883 the place was simply called Torgauten, after the island it stands on.

What changed over the years?

The station was modernised step by step. A fourth-order lens was installed in 1901, and in 1911 a new fog signal and an engine house were added. Electricity arrived in 1951, produced by the station's own diesel generators. Mains power from the mainland only reached the island in 1995, which shows how remote the place was. In 1977 the lighthouse was automated and the residents left. A new light now operates on its own column south of the keeper's house.

Can you stay overnight?

Yes. Since 1992 the station buildings have been rented out as a coastal cabin, looked after by the friends' association Onsø-beviset and Oslofjordens friluftsråd, the outdoor council for the Oslofjord. According to Visit Norway, guests can also sleep in the old lighthouse itself. Space is limited, so it is wise to book ahead.

Who is it for?

  • Lighthouse fans and anyone interested in maritime history.
  • Travellers looking for quiet, sea views and nature.
  • Kayakers, boaters and island-hopping enthusiasts.
  • Photographers who enjoy coastal scenery and historic buildings.
