About this place

Stěžery

Stěžery is a small village a few kilometers west of Hradec Králové, grouped into one municipal unit together with three neighboring hamlets. Around 2,100 people live here, and the road linking Hradec Králové with Nový Bydžov cuts right through the municipality. There's no headline attraction that puts Stěžery on a must-see list, but the place has roots going back to the 13th century, a landmark church, and a former manor house that reward anyone touring the countryside around Hradec Králové.

Where does the village sit, and what belongs to its municipality?

Stěžery is strung along the road running between Hradec Králové and Nový Bydžov, within the Hradec Králové district. The municipal boundary reaches further than the village itself, taking in Stěžírky, Charbuzice, and Hřibsko as well. Stěžery carries the administrative weight for all four: the local office, the parish church, and the old manor all sit here rather than in the smaller settlements.

Who held power over this land through the centuries?

The land's recorded story starts in 1229, when the Opatovice monastery purchased it from King Přemysl Otakar I. Once the monastery was shut down amid the Hussite Wars, control shifted to the town of Hradec Králové, which kept the property under its wing for generations. That arrangement ended in 1632, when two brothers from the Harrach family bought their way in. From then on, Stěžery became one piece of a much larger set of estates the Harrachs were assembling across the Nechanicko area.

What is worth a look if you stop here briefly?

The most recognizable building is the Church of St. Mark, an Empire-style structure finished in 1832. It replaced an earlier chapel on the same spot, one known to have existed as far back as the 14th century. Stone figures flank the entrance: St. John of Nepomuk on the north side, the Virgin Mary on the south.

The second landmark is an old noble residence of Renaissance origin, built alongside a granary courtyard. Renovated in the Baroque style in 1844, the building has since traded its original purpose for a more practical one - it now holds residential flats and a post office branch. Visitors can't go inside, though the outline of the structure still points to its earlier standing.

A war memorial from 1929 honors residents killed in the First World War, and a plaque marks the childhood home of the writer František Řehoř.

How does Stěžery compare with the other parts of the municipality?

Stěžírky, Charbuzice, and Hřibsko share municipal government with Stěžery, but none of them carry the same weight - Stěžery is where the administration, the church, and the historic buildings are concentrated. The other three remain smaller settlements without comparable public infrastructure of their own.
