Statue of Saint Florian in Hořice

Hořice, Czechia

About this place

The Statue of Saint Florian stands among a group of Baroque sculptures surrounding the deanery church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary in Hořice, in the Czech Republic's Hradec Králové Region. It depicts the patron saint of firefighters and fire protection as a Roman legionary extinguishing a burning house — one of the most instantly recognizable figures in Central European sacred art.

Who made this statue and when?

The statue was carved by Josef Rychtera, a sculptor and woodcarver from Hořice active in the first half of the 19th century. Rychtera created the figure of Saint Florian around 1820, close in time to his best-known local work — the Classicist Marian Column on Hořice's main square, whose construction began in 1823. The Florian statue, however, did not originally stand by the church. It first decorated a fountain on Husova Street in the town center. That fountain no longer exists, and at some point the statue was relocated to safer ground around the church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, where several older sacred sculptures from various parts of town were gathered to protect them from decay or from being displaced by construction.

What does the statue of Saint Florian show?

Saint Florian appears in the standard iconography associated with him: dressed as a Roman soldier in a legionary's armor and cloak. He carries the two attributes by which he is recognized across much of the continent — a banner or standard, and a vessel (a bucket or pitcher) from which he pours water onto a burning building at his feet. This simple, legible gesture has for centuries symbolized protection against fire. Florian is the patron of firefighters, chimney sweeps, and anyone at risk from blazes, and his image was traditionally placed by houses, on town squares, and at crossroads as a kind of protective charm against fire disasters.

Why does it stand next to this particular church?

The church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary in Hořice, built between 1741 and 1748 to a design by architect Kilián Ignác Dienzenhofer, replaced an older Gothic church destroyed by fire in 1738. Over time, the grounds around the current Baroque church became a natural gathering point for a collection of the town's older sacred statuary. Part of that collection — including a group depicting Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane and a figure of the Virgin Mary with the Infant Jesus — is attributed to pupils of the Matyáš Bernard Braun school from nearby Kuks and dates to the first half of the 18th century. The Saint Florian statue, though carved later and originally sited elsewhere, joined this ensemble and now stands on the balustrade at the church's western façade, forming, together with its neighbors, a sculptural group assembled in stages rather than built as a single commission.

What should visitors look out for here?

Anyone visiting the church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary should take the time to walk the grounds surrounding it. Besides Saint Florian, several other Baroque figures stand here, each with its own history and original location elsewhere in town. It is a rare chance to see, in a single spot, a cross-section of Hořice's sacred sculpture spanning more than a century — from the Baroque of Braun's pupils to the Classicism of local sculptor Josef Rychtera.
