Sommet de Couard

Sommet de Couard rises to 1,988 metres in the commune of Tartonne, deep in the Préalpes de Haute-Provence. It marks the northern end of a long limestone ridgeline known as the Barre des Dourbes, which stretches for nearly seventeen kilometres, and it counts among the more demanding hiking objectives near Digne-les-Bains.

How to get there?

Most routes start from the village of Tartonne itself. Heading from the hamlet toward the mountains, hikers reach a large parking area next to a concrete water tank at roughly 1,227 metres of elevation. From there, the ascent climbs through pastureland and forest toward the ridge. An alternative approach starts from the village of Archail on the far side of the massif, linking Couard with the neighbouring Sommet de Cucuyon (1,866 m).
