About this place
Solar dos Zagallos in Almada
Solar dos Zagallos is a historic manor house in the Sobreda area of Almada, in Portugal's Setúbal District, just across the Tagus from Lisbon. Today it serves as a cultural venue with a garden open to the public, making it a calm stop away from the capital's crowds.
What is the history of Solar dos Zagallos?
The house dates to the 17th century, following the founding of the Sobreda estate by Rodrigo de Oliveira Zagallo. It combined a family residence with a working farm and included a chapel. The estate stayed with the Zagallo family until 1908, when the Piano family bought it, which is why it is also known as Quinta dos Pianos. In 1980 it passed to Almada's municipal council, which restored it in 1994 while keeping its original design.
What can you see inside?
The upper floor holds the house's formal rooms, reached by a staircase from the entrance courtyard. Two grand halls there were reportedly prepared to receive King João VI. The whole is a typical example of Portuguese residential and agricultural architecture, where the owners' comfort sat alongside the labor of the farm.
Is the garden worth visiting?
Yes, it is one of the main draws. An avenue is lined with benches covered in azulejos, the traditional Portuguese tiles. The grounds also include an orchard, flower beds, ponds and a small chapel dedicated to the Senhor dos Passos (Lord of the Steps), decorated in blue and white tilework. On a hot day the shade is welcome.
What happens here today?
The manor works as a cultural space. It houses the Centro de Artes Tradicionais (Traditional Arts Center), which runs exhibitions, concerts, recitals and activities for children. Almada's city hall also offers guided visits from time to time, so check the current program before you go.
