Solar dos Magalhães

Amarante, Portugal

About this place

Solar dos Magalhães is a historic manor house in the centre of Amarante, in northern Portugal's Porto District. Dating from the 18th century, it is one of the town's emblematic buildings because it is tied to a defining episode in local history: resistance to Napoleonic troops in 1809. After a major renovation, it is open to visitors again.

What is it and where is it?

A "solar" is a Portuguese noble family house. This one stands in the heart of Amarante, in the municipality of the same name, in the Porto District. Its coordinates are roughly 41.27° N, 8.08° W. The town sits on the Tâmega River and is a popular stop for travellers exploring the north of the country, and the Solar fits naturally into a walk through the historic centre.

What role did it play in 1809?

The best-known story of the house concerns 18 April 1809. A column of Napoleonic troops was moving from Porto towards Trás-os-Montes, and fighting broke out in Amarante with Anglo-Portuguese forces. After the battle, Solar dos Magalhães was the first manor house to be set on fire. The blaze left only the external walls of the original structure standing. For that reason, locals regard the house as a symbol of resistance against the invaders.

What does the architecture look like?

The building has a polygonal plan and two floors. The main façade is its most striking feature. On the ground floor, a loggia with six arches resting on sturdy pilasters was opened up. The design echoes the Italian architectural treatises of the 16th century, giving the elevation a Renaissance flavour even though the house dates from the following century.

Is it protected?

Yes. Since 1971, Solar dos Magalhães has held the status of Property of Public Interest (Imóvel de Interesse Público), one of the forms of heritage protection used in Portugal.

What has changed recently?

The surviving walls were renovated in a project by architect Álvaro Siza Vieira, one of Portugal's best-known architects. The renewed building reopened to the public on 14 February 2025. It is intended to host the Museum of Identity and Memory of Amarante (MIMAR), which will present the history and heritage of the town.

Is it worth a visit?

If you are interested in the Napoleonic wars in Portugal, or in contemporary architecture set within historic walls, Solar dos Magalhães is a good stop on a route through Amarante. Before you go, check current opening hours and what is on display with the town hall or the tourist information office, since the building has only recently begun operating in its new form.
