Solar do Visconde da Barreira

Leiria, Portugal

About this place

Solar do Visconde da Barreira is an eighteenth-century manor house in Barreira, in the municipality of Leiria in central Portugal. Together with its garden, it stands as an important example of local seigniorial architecture and is gradually being turned into an arts venue.

What is Solar do Visconde da Barreira?

In Portugal, a "solar" is the seat of a noble family. This building dates from the 1700s and reflects the residential architecture of prominent families of that time. Its heraldic portal shows a cross set between castles, along with the cross of the Pereira family. The site lies within the united parish of Leiria, Pousos, Barreira and Cortes.

Who was the Viscount of Barreira?

The first Viscount of Barreira was Dr. António Carlos da Costa Guerra. According to available descriptions, the manor always remained in his family. Today it belongs to the Leiria municipality and is run by the Barreira parish council, the lowest tier of local government.

What can you see in the garden?

The garden takes inspiration from Baroque and Renaissance design. It holds trees that are centuries old, and a boxwood-lined alley is its best-known feature. It is a quiet place for a stroll, though the grounds are undergoing redevelopment, so some areas may be temporarily unavailable.

Solar das Artes and the Festival do Visconde

The manor is tied to the Solar das Artes project, which aims to showcase local artists, encourage creative work and contact with creative processes, and foster ties between Portuguese and international artists. It also seeks to link art with nature in a calm, minimalist setting. The Festival do Visconde grew out of this idea and debuted in 2024 as a three-day celebration of the arts. The garden also hosts performances, such as theatrical stories about the history of Barreira presented by the Manipulartes group.

Restoration after Storm Kristin

The garden was badly damaged by Storm Kristin. In June 2026 the municipality launched a public tender for rehabilitating the outdoor areas, valued at 1,336,190.48 euros. This is the first of two phases, and the second is meant to address the building itself. The design by the Cubicoffice team is minimalist. It includes new structures called "tascas" as social spaces, a network of walkways, a permanent metal sculpture, and an upgraded children's playground.
