About this place
Solar da Quinta dos Lagares d'El-Rei is a former noble country house in Lisbon, set in the Alvalade district. It is one of the few surviving reminders of the many rural estates that once surrounded the Portuguese capital. Since 1982 it has held the status of Property of Public Interest (Imóvel de Interesse Público).
Where does the name come from?
The name refers to the royal wine presses (Portuguese "lagares"). The estate has been known since the Middle Ages, and records show that in 1384 it contained vineyards and royal wine presses. They were then given to Afonso Pires da Charneca, a supporter of King John I, and his wife Constança Esteves. In 1392 John I granted the property, together with its vineyards, to Doctor Martim Afonso Pires.
The Almada family
In 1463 the estate passed to the Almada family. This happened through the marriage of Constança de Noronha, great-granddaughter of Doctor Martim Afonso Pires, to Fernando de Almada, 2nd Count of Avranches. The chain of ownership shows how the property moved from royal officials and supporters of the Avis dynasty to influential aristocratic houses.
What to expect
The solar is an example of a suburban Lisbon retreat where living quarters were joined to a working farm. The complex includes outbuildings: stables, a wine cellar, a barn, an oven and a caretaker's house. Inside, the artistic furnishings include paintings by Carlos Reis, an oratory with a trompe-l'oeil decorated altarpiece, and a 17th-century panel depicting the Martyrdom of Saint Lawrence.
Visiting tips
This is a heritage building tied to the Alvalade neighbourhood rather than a classic attraction with tickets and fixed hours. Before you go, check whether the interiors are currently open, as access may be occasional or limited to events. Even if you cannot go inside, the setting among modern buildings shows clearly how the city grew over former farmland.
Why it is worth a look
We recommend it to anyone interested in Lisbon's history away from the main tourist trails: manor-house architecture, the story of noble families, and the shift from a rural to an urban landscape. It pairs well with a walk around Alvalade, a district known for its planned twentieth-century layout.
