About this place
Skašovské jezero
Skašovské jezero is one of four lakes forming the Tovačov lakes group (also known as the Skašov lakes), located southeast of the town of Tovačov in Central Moravia, close to the point where the Bečva river flows into the Morava. Like the other lakes in the group, it was formed by the flooding of former sand and gravel pits.
How did this lake come to exist?
Gravel and sand extraction in the area began in the 1950s. The resulting pits gradually filled with water, giving rise to today's cluster of lakes. The process did not stop once extraction ended in some spots — quarrying continues in parts of the area, which is why the total surface of the whole lake complex, currently around 330 hectares, keeps growing over time.
What does the lake complex that Skašovské belongs to look like?
The Tovačov lakes are not a single body of water but four separate lakes lying close together: Annínské jezero, Troubecké jezero, Skašovské jezero, and Donbas jezero. Each plays a somewhat different role and is subject to different usage rules, even though all of them share the same origin — former extraction activity in the Morava and Bečva river valley.
What can visitors do at Skašovské jezero?
Sport fishing is permitted on all lakes in the complex, including Skašovské jezero. More than 30 fish species live in these waters, making the area an attractive destination for anglers from the Olomouc region and beyond.
Can you swim in Skašovské jezero?
Of the four lakes in the complex, official swimming is allowed only at Annínské jezero, and only in a marked section of the shore indicated by signs and buoys. Skašovské jezero does not function as a bathing lake — its role within the system leans more toward fishing and natural value than recreational swimming.
What kind of nature can be found around the lake?
The entire Tovačov lakes complex, Skašovské jezero included, is a valuable natural area in Central Moravia. Around seventy bird species have been recorded there, for which the flooded former gravel pits and surrounding vegetation provide feeding, resting, or breeding grounds. Combined with the rich fish population, this makes the area an important spot on the region's ecological map.
