About this place
Skansen in Tromsø is a historic cluster of timber buildings on a small rise right at the water's edge in the city centre. It is among the oldest places in Tromsø, with a past that reaches back to a time before the town itself existed.
What is Skansen in Tromsø?
The name refers to a former fortification. The earthen mound is regarded as a remnant of medieval defences. The earliest known written mention comes from the 1742–1745 records of Major Peter Schnitler, who surveyed the border region of northern Norway. Even then, nobody could say precisely when or why the rampart was built. Local historians suggest it may be around five centuries older than that first record.
How did the place develop?
In 1789, after trade in northern Norway was opened up, a customs station was built on the mound. The customs house is the oldest surviving building in the area. When Tromsø received town status in 1794, it had only about 80 inhabitants, and the customs house was one of very few public sites in the settlement.
The buildings seen today date roughly from the late 18th century to around 1850. They are timber houses typical of northern Norwegian building tradition, grouped around the old rampart.
Over the years the site changed purpose. Around 1890 it served as an isolation hospital for patients with infectious diseases, including diphtheria cases as late as 1904 and 1932. The grounds were larger then than they are now.
Who owns the buildings?
The buildings on the mound belong to Tromsø municipality. The waterfront buildings are owned by the Polar Museum Foundation (Stiftelsen Polarmuseet). In 1991 the city museum took over responsibility for Skansen and renovated the whole area.
What can you see today?
Skansen is mainly a place for a quiet stroll. You can admire the timber buildings from the turn of the 19th century, look at the rampart, and enjoy a view over the harbour from the small rise. The main building now houses offices and meeting rooms, so the interior is not usually open like a typical museum. A small building holds a restaurant.
