About this place
Serra de Nogueira (also written Serra da Nogueira) is a mountain range in north-eastern Portugal, southwest of the city of Bragança. Its summit reaches 1,319 m above sea level, making it one of the highest points in mainland Portugal, yet it sits in the quiet, uncrowded Trás-os-Montes region.
Where is Serra de Nogueira?
The range lies in Alto Trás-os-Montes and spans the municipalities of Bragança, Macedo de Cavaleiros and Vinhais. It runs north-east to south-west over roughly a dozen kilometres. It is regarded as an offshoot of the Montesinho massif and lies at the foot of Montesinho Natural Park. From Bragança it is a short drive, so it works well as a day trip from the city.
What is at the top?
The highest point is crowned by the Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora da Serra (Our Lady of the Mountain). It is prized as a viewpoint: in clear weather you can look out over the wide, rolling plateaus of northern Portugal. The mountain has a prominence of about 440 m and rises clearly above its surroundings, so the panorama is broad.
A curiosity for rail fans: Rossas station in Santa Comba de Rossas is described as the highest point of Portugal's railway network.
Nature and protection
Serra de Nogueira belongs to the Natura 2000 network. A Site of Community Importance called "Montesinho – Nogueira" was created here, along with a Special Protection Area for birds. The slopes carry a vast oak forest, described as one of the largest continuous oak woodlands in Portugal and, according to some sources, in Europe. Wildlife includes wolves, foxes, wild boar, wildcats and many bird species.
How to explore it
Hiking is the main draw. A network of trails crosses the range, popular with trekkers and walkers. Cyclists also treat the climb to the sanctuary as a challenge, since the road rises from Bragança to over 1,300 m.
- Best time: spring and early autumn, when it is warm but not hot. Winters can be cold and windy at altitude.
- Clothing: layers and sturdy footwear, as mountain weather changes quickly.
- Water and food: there is little infrastructure on the trails, so carry supplies.
