Sega waterfall

Cascata della Sega is a scenic waterfall located in the municipality of Premilcuore, in the province of Forlì-Cesena, within the Foreste Casentinesi National Park in Emilia-Romagna, Italy. The Rabbi River, carving its path through a sandstone gorge, creates one of the most photogenic natural landmarks in the entire region.

Why is it called the "Saw Waterfall"?

The name "della Sega" — literally the Saw Waterfall — has nothing to do with an old water-powered sawmill. The real explanation is geological: over thousands of years, the Rabbi River has cut into the sandstone bedrock, creating a series of nearly parallel grooves that look like the marks left by an enormous saw. It is a striking example of river erosion that is clearly visible to the naked eye.

What will you see there?

Just above the waterfall, the river flows calmly across a wide flat sandstone slab, forming an almost horizontal streambed. The current then accelerates, grows turbulent, and plunges into a relatively deep pool at the base of the cascade. That pool is suitable for swimming in summer — the water is clear, and the rocky banks offer shaded spots to rest.

The entire area lies within the heart of the Foreste Casentinesi National Park, one of the best-preserved forest complexes in the Apennines. A dense canopy of beech and silver fir forms a natural roof over the trail, keeping the walk cool even on hot days.

How to get there?

A shaded hiking trail of about 2 km starts from the center of Premilcuore village. The path is well-marked and suitable for visitors of all ages — no special equipment or high fitness level is required. Premilcuore is located approximately 60 km south of Forlì; by car, take the SP4 provincial road. Entry to the waterfall is free.

When is the best time to visit?

Late spring and summer — May through August — offer the best experience. In June and July the pool at the base of the falls is full enough for swimming, and water temperatures are comfortable. Spring snowmelt produces the most dramatic flow volumes. In autumn, the beech forest turns gold and red, providing a striking backdrop for photography.

Avoid weekend visits in midsummer if you prefer a quieter experience — Cascata della Sega is popular with locals from across Emilia-Romagna and can get busy.

Surroundings

Nearby there was once the Cascata Urlante (the Screaming Waterfall), but it has been cordoned off since summer 2024 following a fatal accident, so it is currently inaccessible. Consider spending extra time in Premilcuore itself — a small stone village with traditional Apennine architecture worth exploring.

Can you swim in the pool below the waterfall? Yes. In summer the pool at the base of the cascade is deep enough for swimming. The bottom is rocky, so water shoes are recommended.

How long does the hike take? Allow about 1 to 1.5 hours for the round trip from the center of Premilcuore, not counting time spent at the water. The trail is roughly 2 km each way.

Is there an entry fee? No. Cascata della Sega is freely accessible year-round, and parking in the village is free.
