Second Maksimir Pond

Second Maksimir Pond (Drugo maksimirsko jezero) is a small lake inside Maksimir Park in Zagreb, the second in a chain of five lakes that give the park its distinctive character.

Where is the Second Lake located?

The lake sits at roughly 122 metres above sea level, just north of the First Lake (Prvo jezero) as you move deeper into the park. Covering less than a hectare, it is the smallest of the five Maksimir lakes, with a depth ranging between 0.5 and 1.5 metres. Its water comes from the Bliznec stream, supplemented periodically by a stream flowing from the Dahlia area, which dries up during dry spells.

Maksimir Park is located in eastern Zagreb and is easy to reach by tram from the city centre — a stop sits right at the park's main entrance. From there, a walk along the tree-lined paths leads you past the First Lake and on to the Second Lake. What is the history behind the lake?

The Maksimir lakes underwent a major renovation completed in December 2021. The work included draining the ponds, relocating wildlife for the duration of the project, rebuilding the stone embankment along the First Lake, and reinforcing the slopes and erosion protection around the Second Lake. The goal was to preserve a water system that remains one of the most recognisable features of the entire park.
