Schreberovy zahrádky

Brno, Czechia

About this place

Schreberovy zahrádky is a compact green park in the northern part of Brno, covering roughly 2.4 hectares between Lesnická, Jugoslávská, and Volejníkova streets. Its story spans more than a century — from a cemetery, through the first allotment-garden colony in the Austro-Hungarian monarchy, to today's family-friendly park.

Where does the name come from?

The park is named after Daniel Gottlieb Moritz Schreber, a German orthopedic physician who promoted treating patients through fresh air and garden work. The idea of "Schreber gardens" spread from Germany across Central Europe, and Brno was among the first cities in the Austro-Hungarian monarchy to adopt it.

What stood here before the gardens?

Before the allotments existed, the site served as a cemetery. The Žabrdovice cemetery, in use since 1783 on Vranovská street, was relocated here in 1853. After it closed, the grounds were gradually turned into an allotment-garden colony starting in 1907 — the first of its kind anywhere in the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. Seventeen garden plots were established in the first year, eventually growing to 74, along with three children's playgrounds.

How did the park change during the 20th century?

At the turn of the 1950s and 1960s, Brno thoroughly redeveloped the area. In place of the allotment gardens, a park was created and planted with dozens of shrubs along with coniferous and deciduous trees. Before 1989 it was known as Julius Fučík Park, named after a Czechoslovak communist journalist and activist. After the fall of communism, it was restored to its original name, Schreberovy zahrádky, recalling its origins as a garden colony.

What can visitors do here today?

The park is popular with families with children. It has a large playground and a café on site, along with sports facilities including a multi-sport court. Its tree cover, away from the busiest city streets, makes it a pleasant spot for a walk or a rest in the shade.

Where exactly is the park located?

Schreberovy zahrádky lies in the northern part of Brno, between Lesnická, Jugoslávská, and Volejníkova streets — a location fairly close to the city centre and easy to reach from the surrounding neighborhoods.
