Lužánky

Brno, Czechia

About this place

Lužánky is the largest municipal park in Brno and the oldest public park anywhere in the Czech Republic. It sits in the Brno-střed district, right on the edge of the historic city centre, and has served for generations as the city's main green space for rest and recreation.

When was the park founded?

Lužánky was established in 1786 on the initiative of Emperor Joseph II, as part of the Josephine reforms, on land that had previously belonged to a Jesuit farmstead and gardens. From the outset it was open to the public, which was an unusual choice for its time and places Lužánky among the earliest parks of this kind in Central Europe. Because of its historical significance, the entire park complex has been protected as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic since 1958.

What is the centrepiece of the park?

At the heart of Lužánky stands a Neo-Renaissance pavilion built in 1855 to a design by the Viennese architect Ludwig Förster. Known today as Kasino, the building hosted balls, concerts and exhibitions for decades and now functions as a leisure centre for children and young people. Much of the park's cultural life still revolves around this building.

What is there to see while walking through the park?

The grounds are decorated with numerous sculptures, monuments and fountains set among mature trees, which are among the park's biggest draws. A stream runs through the park, home to fish that visitors can watch from the banks, and the park also keeps small animals that are a popular attraction for children. Together these elements create a landscape that combines ornamental design with recreational use, typical of nineteenth-century city parks.

How can visitors spend time in Lužánky?

Lužánky is where Brno residents come to exercise and unwind outdoors. The park offers space for jogging, tennis, pétanque and volleyball, plus an outdoor gym for those who want a workout. Families can use the playground, and several places to eat are located nearby for a break after a walk. The park draws visitors year-round, in every season and regardless of weather.

Where exactly is the park located?

Lužánky lies in the Brno-střed district, directly next to the city centre, making it easy to reach for both residents and visitors exploring Brno on foot. Its proximity to the historic core means it often becomes a natural stop for a rest during a day of sightseeing.
