São Miguel

Olhão, Portugal

About this place

Cerro de São Miguel is the highest point of the Serra de Monte Figo range in the municipality of Olhão, in Portugal's Algarve. The summit rises to about 411 m above sea level and ranks among the best viewpoints on the eastern stretch of the Algarve coast. It sits in the parish of Moncarapacho, a few kilometres inland, and is also known locally as Monte Figo.

What can you see from the top of Cerro de São Miguel?

The hill stands above the coastal plain, so the outlook is long and unobstructed by higher ridges. In the foreground lies the Ria Formosa, the network of lagoons and barrier islands that separates the mainland from the Atlantic. In clear weather you can take in a large part of the Algarve's southern shoreline. This is a place to visit for the panorama itself: there is no ticketed site to tour, and the appeal is the walk and the view.

Why did this hill matter strategically?

Height and isolation made it a natural lookout for anything approaching from the sea. Local folklore calls Cerro de São Miguel the "Watchtower of the Moors", and tradition holds that sentinels posted here could spot pirate ships heading for the Ria Formosa from many miles away. Whatever share of these stories is legend, the topography explains the reputation: it is a natural observation post over the whole area.

What is the visit like on foot?

Hiking routes climb the hill from around Moncarapacho and appear in walking guides for the Olhão municipality. The route pairs the rural interior of the Algarve with a coastal view, which makes it a good alternative to a day spent only on the beach. Bring water and a hat, since the summit offers little shade, and aim for morning or late afternoon light over the lagoons.

What does the name São Miguel have to do with the fair?

Saint Michael (São Miguel) is also tied to Olhão through the traditional Feira de São Miguel, a fair with roots in the 18th century. After roughly a decade away it returned to town, held from 25 to 29 September at Largo da Feira, reviving a local custom of gathering, trading and entertainment. Check dates before travelling if you want to combine the hill walk with the fair.
