Santa Maria Mitjancera

Santa Maria Mitjancera is a parish church tucked into the western side of Barcelona's Eixample district, on Carrer d'Entença. Why the unusual name?

The parish was established on 26 June 1936, right before the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War, on land donated by a Barcelona resident named Torrents. His one condition was that the new church be dedicated to Mary as "Mitjancera de Totes les Gràcies" — Mediator of All Graces. Construction of the temple itself didn't begin until 2 May 1943, with the finished building blessed in November 1944. The postwar years shaped its restrained, functional design, though the architects still gave it a distinct silhouette rather than copying older Eixample churches.

What's inside?

Step past the entrance and you won't find the long historicist nave typical of many Eixample parishes — instead there's a simpler, more utilitarian space, characteristic of churches raised during the lean 1940s. Around the year 2000, a chapel of the Blessed Sacrament was added on the grounds of the former parish school. A memorial chapel — the columbarium

In November 2018 the parish blessed a columbarium with room for more than 900 urns.
