Santa Eugènia del Gomar

Santa Eugènia del Gomar is a pre-Romanesque chapel standing next to the old Gomar farmhouse, in the municipality of Moià, within the Moianès region of inland Catalonia. Little remains today beyond sections of wall, but the site's roots reach back to the early Middle Ages, when it briefly served as a parish church.

What happened after it lost its parish status?

In the 13th century Santa Eugènia del Gomar was demoted from a parish to a simple chapel dependent on the parish of Santa Coloma Sasserra, a subordinate status it kept through the early modern period. Worship still continued there until the 17th century. In 1878 the chapel was formally annexed to the parish of Collsuspina, closing out its long run as an independent place of worship.

What survives of the building today?

Of the original single-nave, pre-Romanesque structure, the apse on the east side is the best-preserved part: a rectangular space roughly 3 by 2 metres, covered by a barrel vault. Only a small section of the north wall still stands, and almost nothing remains of the south wall. The ruins sit right beside the Gomar farmhouse that gave the chapel its name, and have since been consolidated and partly restored to halt further decay.
