About this place
Saint Bartholomew Church stands at the heart of Česká Bělá, a small village in the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands, nine kilometers northeast of Havlíčkův Brod and the same distance south of Chotěboř. The building occupies a corner where several village roads meet, within the grounds of a former cemetery no longer in use.
How old is the church?
The church dates back to the 14th century and was originally built in a purely Gothic style. The village itself is even older — the first written record of Česká Bělá appears in 1257, making the church one of the tangible traces of the area's earliest settlement.
What changed during the 1734 rebuilding?
In 1734 the church underwent a substantial reconstruction that widened the nave. From that point on, the building has combined Gothic origins with Baroque additions — the most visible result being the Baroque gable that closes off the presbytery.
What does the building look like from outside?
The church has a single-aisle, rectangular plan. A polygonal tower rises against the south wall, capped by a four-sided pyramidal roof topped with an ornamental cross bearing a trefoil. Two Gothic portals survive in the tower, and two bells still hang inside it. The long presbytery is covered by late Gothic rib vaulting resting on cylindrical supports — one of the few elements that came through the Baroque remodeling untouched.
What is worth seeing inside?
Next to the triumphal arch that separates the nave from the presbytery stands a stone, semicircular baptismal font, among the oldest surviving furnishings. The interior is otherwise modest, in keeping with a village church, but the coexistence of Gothic vaulting and a Baroque gable makes it a clear record of how a rural sacred building was reshaped, layer by layer, over four centuries.
Is the church a protected monument?
Yes. Since 1963 the building has been listed as a cultural monument (kulturní památka) on the Czech heritage register, confirming its recognized historical and architectural value.
