About this place
Church of the Holy Trinity is a small Baroque church in Havlíčkův Brod, standing on U Trojice street at the edge of Budoucnost city park, just steps from the town centre. It has been protected as a Czech cultural monument since 1963, and it stands out among churches in the Vysočina region for an unusual reason: its origin story starts not with a building, but with a legend about a healing spring.
Why is the church dedicated to the Holy Trinity?
Before the church existed, a small 17th-century chapel stood on the site next to a spring that local tradition credited with miraculous powers. According to legend, the spring's water flowed from three separate sources, and on the feast of the Holy Trinity a tulip bearing three flowers on a single stem was said to bloom there. The story also tells of a blind miller's wife who regained her sight after using water from the spring. These tales turned the spot into a popular pilgrimage destination for people seeking a cure in the miraculous water.
When was the church built?
The spring itself was enclosed in 1716. A few years later, in 1719-1720, local dean Jan Křtitel Seidl took the lead in founding a church on the site, and thanks to his efforts construction was finished in 1734. Structural problems soon became apparent, so the building had to be reinforced and enlarged: in 1761 two side wings were added, giving the church a broader, more symmetrical footprint.
What does the church look like architecturally?
The church is built in the Baroque style. Its core is a hexagonal central structure dating from 1719-1720, to which the two side wings were later attached. This combination of a compact central volume with added wings gives the building a distinctive, tightly composed silhouette that sets it apart from the typical single-nave parish churches found in the surrounding area.
What else is worth seeing nearby?
Right next to the Holy Trinity church stands the Chapel of the Holy Cross, which is also under heritage protection. It carries the unusual nickname "Chapel of the Holy Grail," a name rarely seen elsewhere in the Czech lands and an extra point of interest for visitors exploring this corner of Havlíčkův Brod. Together, the church and the chapel form a small, intimate sacred complex tucked into the greenery of Budoucnost park, away from the busier town centre around the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary.
