Sa Spendula

Sa Spendula is a waterfall in Villacidro, in the Medio Campidano region of Sardinia, Italy. The Rio Coxinas river, rising near Santu Miali, drops in three separate cascades spanning a total height of up to 60 metres.

What will you see at the falls?

Each of the three steps creates a natural pool before the water tumbles further into the gorge below. The canyon is defined by granite needles, including the distinctive formation locally called Campanas de Sisinni Conti. Pink and grey granite boulders, dense pine forests, and Mediterranean maquis scrub give the area a rugged, untouched character. A wooden bridge crosses the river and leads to a picnic area equipped for visitors; from here, a short trail also climbs to the top of the cascade, offering views down into the gorge.

The name Sa Spendula comes from the Sardinian language and simply means the cascade. The site has a literary footnote: Italian poet Gabriele D'Annunzio celebrated it in a sonnet written during one of his visits to Sardinia in 1882.

How to get to Sa Spendula?

The waterfall sits less than one kilometre from the centre of Villacidro. Signposts within the town mark the route. A small parking area on the left side of the road is the starting point; from there, a footpath descends to the falls in just a few minutes. A private car is the most practical option - from Cagliari the drive takes around 45 minutes via Decimomannu or Sanluri.

When is the best time to visit?

Autumn and winter bring the highest water levels, when all three cascade stages run at full force. In spring the flow diminishes noticeably, and in summer the river can slow to a trickle. The gorge remains scenic year-round thanks to its granite formations and dense vegetation, but visitors hoping to see the waterfall at its most impressive should plan a trip in the cooler months.

What can you do here?

The main draw is the walk along the path beside the falls and a stop at the picnic area. Adventurous visitors can join a guided canyoning descent through the gorge - half-day trips are rated easy to intermediate and are suitable for beginners. The combination of geology, water, and dense forest also makes it an excellent spot for nature photography.
