Rocher de Mutzig

Rocher de Mutzig is a rocky summit in the Vosges mountains, towering above the village of Lutzelhouse in the Bruche valley, Alsace. It reaches 1,008 meters — exactly the same height as the neighboring Donon, one of the best-known peaks in the whole range.

Where does the name come from?

The oldest recorded name for this summit was "montagne du Katte" (Cat Mountain). As early as the 13th century it was Frenchified into "Côte(s)," and the old Alemannic dialect of Alsace later turned it into "Katzenberg." The mountain only picked up its current name, Rocher de Mutzig, from the Mutzig forest that stretches beneath its rocks.

The main draw is the geology: the summit is built from a sandy conglomerate rock highly resistant to erosion, which explains its jagged, tower-like shapes. From the top you get a full 360° panorama over the Bruche valley and the surrounding ranges, including the Donon, the Schneeberg and the Champ du Feu.

Close by, on the same trail, stands the Porte de Pierre — a natural arch of pink sandstone, 4 to 5 meters high, carved out by erosion over time. It's one of the region's more striking geological curiosities and a popular stop for photos.

The rock also carries a local legend: fairies were said to be building a bridge across the Bruche valley, but the work stopped the moment Jesus was born, stripping them of their power — the bridge collapsed, and the boulders scattered across the slopes are said to be its remains.

How to get there and which routes to choose?

Most trails start from the village of Lutzelhouse. From there, waymarked paths of varying difficulty lead up to the summit, ranging from short loops to full-day hikes. One of the more popular options is the Lutzelhouse – Rocher de Mutzig – Petit Katzenberg loop, roughly 17.7 km with 841 m of elevation gain, for which you should set aside 6.5 to 7 hours. Shorter variants combining Rocher de Mutzig with the Porte de Pierre are available for less experienced hikers.

Given the rocky, occasionally steep terrain, sturdy hiking boots are recommended. The trail isn't technically demanding, but the cumulative climb calls for reasonable fitness.

When is the best time to visit?

Clear-weather days offer the best views — spring and autumn are ideal, when the air is crisper and the Vosges forests show off their colors. Summer brings more foot traffic on the trail, while in winter the rocky sections can ice over, so it's worth checking conditions before setting out.
