Riegrovy sady

Praga, Czechia

About this place

Riegrovy sady is a large landscape park in Prague's Vinohrady district, known among locals as the spot with one of the best free views of Prague Castle in the whole city. Unlike the formal, manicured gardens closer to the historic centre, Riegrovy sady has an informal, English-style layout — winding paths, open grassy slopes and clusters of mature trees — that makes it easy to find a quiet corner for a picnic or simply to sit and look out over the rooftops of the Old Town.

Where does the park's name come from?

The land where the park now stands was once covered with vineyards, destroyed during the Thirty Years' War and later replaced with kitchen gardens and ornamental grounds. At the turn of the 20th century the city joined several neighbouring plots — including a garden known as Kanálka — into a single public park laid out in the English style. It opened in the first decade of the 1900s and was named after František Ladislav Rieger, a leading 19th-century Czech politician and figure of the Czech national revival; his statue was unveiled in the park in 1913. The name did not survive unchanged, though: during the Nazi occupation the park was renamed Smetanovy sady, after the composer Bedřich Smetana, because Rieger's association with Czech nationalism made his name unwelcome to the occupying authorities. After the war the historic name Riegrovy sady was restored and has remained ever since.

What is there to see in the park?

The park's most recognisable landmark is Mlékárna, a small Late Classicist pavilion that once served as a dairy and today houses a café with a lookout point. From here, and from the nearby hillside, visitors get one of the most photographed views in Prague: a sweeping panorama across the Vltava toward Prague Castle, St Vitus Cathedral and the rooftops of Malá Strana. The park itself is large and hilly, with broad grassy banks that fill up with people bringing blankets and food for a picnic on warm days, while a playground and open lawns make it a popular destination for families.

Where can you eat and relax in the park?

Riegrovy sady is famous across Prague for its beer garden, one of the largest and most popular of its kind in the city. Long rows of wooden tables set among the trees, Czech beer served straight from the tap, and a view of the sunset over the castle draw both Vinohrady residents and visitors looking for a more local alternative to the beer halls of the historic centre. It is a favourite after-work and weekend meeting spot, and its relaxed, neighbourhood atmosphere sets it apart from the more commercial beer gardens closer to Old Town.
