Residência da Quinta da Trindade

Seixal, Portugal

About this place

Residência da Quinta da Trindade – a palace of azulejos in Seixal

Residência da Quinta da Trindade is a historic residence in the municipality of Seixal, Setúbal District, across the Tagus from Lisbon. It stands on a former farming estate in Azinheira and has been classed as a Property of Public Interest (Imóvel de Interesse Público) since 1971. It is best known for the huge number of azulejo tiles decorating its interiors.

What kind of place is it?

The residence is a small palace built into a larger agricultural estate, a quinta. The building opens toward the Tagus and originally had its own loading dock for moving goods by river. Its coordinates are roughly 38.644 N, 9.093 W.

What is its history?

The origins of Quinta da Trindade go back to the late 14th century, when the Order of the Holy Trinity founded a convent here. The friars also built the Ermida da Boa Viagem, a chapel of the Good Voyage, on the same site. In the 16th century the estate was called Quinta da Sanctíssima Trindade. The convent ceased to exist after religious orders were expelled from the country and after the 1755 Lisbon earthquake. Today the former residential part of the estate serves as a home.

Why visit?

How many azulejos are inside?

The residence holds around 8,000 tiles. The collection spans many periods, from 15th-century Hispano-Arabic tiles to blue-and-white designs of the 17th century. It also includes a panel bearing the name Quinta da Trindade, made in the 20th century at the Lusitânia factory.

What is the building's style?

The architecture has a strongly eclectic character. Stone frames around doors and windows and the layout of the staircase combine elements from different eras. Tile skirtings on the walls come partly from demolished buildings of various periods, so the whole reads like an anthology of Portuguese history.

How to plan a visit

Quinta da Trindade is linked to the Seixal Municipal Ecomuseum, so check the municipality website (cm-seixal.pt) before travelling to see whether and how the site can be visited. Because part of the residence is inhabited or in use, access may be limited. It pairs well with other stops on the southern bank of the Tagus.
