Quatrocchi

Belvedere Quattrocchi is one of the most celebrated lookout points on the island of Lipari, perched on the west side along the road toward Pianoconte. The name "Quattrocchi" means "four eyes," a nod to the idea that one pair of eyes simply isn't enough to take in everything the view has to offer.

Where exactly is it?

The viewpoint sits roughly 3–4 km from Lipari's town center, on a sharp bend of the road heading toward Pianoconte. You'll reach it about 300 meters past the turn-off for Valle Muria beach. It's marked as an official scenic terrace, giving an open panorama over the island's southwestern coastline.

How do you get there?

You can drive, ride a scooter, or take the local bus that runs from Lipari toward Pianoconte and Quattropani — there's a stop right by the belvedere. Walking or cycling is also possible, though the road climbs steadily and can feel exposed under the summer sun, so early morning or late afternoon are more comfortable times to make the trip.

Quattrocchi offers one of the finest views in the entire Aeolian archipelago. Below, you'll spot Valle Muria beach, with its dark volcanic sand, large boulders, and steep surrounding cliffs. Two striking rock formations, Pietra Lunga and Pietra Menalda, rise from the sea like solitary spires within the frame. To the left, the town of Lipari and its harbor come into view, while further out across the strait, the island of Vulcano dominates the horizon, often with visible vapor drifting from its active fumaroles. On clear days, you can also pick out Punta di Jacopo and Punta del Perciato along the coast.

Is it worth heading down to Valle Muria beach?

The beach visible from the belvedere draws visitors looking for a quieter alternative to Lipari's town beaches. The path down is steep and rocky, so sturdy shoes or water shoes are recommended — the shoreline is made up mostly of large pebbles rather than soft sand. It's worth assessing the descent from the viewpoint above before committing to it.

When is the best time to visit?

Early morning and just before sunset bring the best light for photos and the smallest crowds, when the sun sharpens the contrast between the dark rock and the turquoise water below. During peak summer (July–August), the small parking area near the belvedere fills up quickly, so visiting outside midday hours helps.
