Profil Morávky

Stare Miasto, Czechia

About this place

Profil Morávky is a natural monument protecting a wild, unregulated stretch of the Morávka river near the village of Staré Město by Frýdek-Místek, in the Moravian-Silesian Region of the Czech Republic. Covering nearly 50 hectares along roughly 2.5 kilometres of the riverbed, the reserve sits at an elevation of 298 to 319 metres above sea level.

What makes this stretch of river special?

The core value of the reserve is the river itself — specifically, the fact that it was never straightened or channelled. The Morávka flows here through a natural gravel bed with irregular, jagged banks that expose bedrock dating from before the last ice age. Over thousands of years the current has carved rocky thresholds, rapids and deep scour pools into this bedrock, and in places the valley narrows into something close to a small canyon. Such a long, fully natural river section is now rare in the region, where most watercourses were regulated or embanked during the 20th century.

What wildlife lives here?

The Morávka valley supports species tied closely to clean, fast-flowing water and undisturbed riverbanks. Brook lamprey and river crayfish both occur along this stretch — both are critically endangered species and serve as reliable indicators of water quality and the overall health of the river ecosystem. Among the plants, German tamarisk stands out: a shrub adapted to gravelly, periodically flooded banks of mountain rivers, now scarce across the Czech Republic, alongside other species characteristic of the valley's shaded, moist slopes.

When was the area protected?

The site was declared a natural monument in 1990, once it became clear how unusual a fully natural lowland-to-foothill river section like this had become. Because most nearby rivers had already been reshaped by flood-control works, this surviving fragment of the Morávka took on a reference value beyond its own valley — it shows what regional rivers looked like before large-scale human intervention.

What can visitors expect?

Profil Morávky lies within easy reach of the hiking and cycling routes connecting Frýdek-Místek with Staré Město and onward toward the Silesian-Moravian Beskids. Walking along the riverbed brings you close to the rocky thresholds and rapids, while the calmer stretches and deeper pools invite you to stop and simply listen to the water. This is a place better suited to quiet observation than sightseeing in the conventional sense — there are no lookout points or visitor infrastructure, and its appeal lies in direct contact with a living, untamed river.
