About this place

Meandry Lučiny (Lučina Meanders) is a protected nature reserve within the city of Havířov, straddling the border between the Havířov-Město and Bludovice districts, just a short distance from the city center. The protected area covers 40.65 hectares and was designated by decree of the District Office in Karviná on 25 November 1991. It preserves one of the few stretches of river in the region that has never been artificially straightened or channeled.

What does the reserve protect?

At the heart of the site is a roughly 2.5-kilometer stretch of the Lučina River, which flows freely through several meters of clay deposits. Because the channel has never been regulated, the river is still actively reshaping itself — its meanders shift position and form over time, a process that has continued uninterrupted for decades. This ongoing dynamism makes the reserve a rare sight in a heavily industrialized part of the Czech Republic, where most watercourses were straightened long ago for flood control or industrial use.

Surrounding the riverbed are wetlands, floodplain vegetation and secondary meadows that developed on former agricultural land left to natural succession. This mosaic of habitats — from open water and mudflats to reed beds and alder floodplain forest — makes the area remarkably rich in biodiversity given its modest size.

What species live here?

The river's constant carving and shifting of its channel creates a variety of microhabitats, each supporting different plant and animal communities. The reserve is home to 15 species of dragonflies, making it a notable site for entomologists in the region. The Lučina's waters support 13 fish species, while the riverbanks and oxbow pools provide refuge for endangered amphibian species that depend on the calm, food-rich conditions for breeding.

The alder floodplain forest lining the river acts as a natural filter and buffer, slowing the flow of water during high water events and moderating the local microclimate, while also offering shelter to birds and small mammals tied to wetland environments.

Why visit?

Meandry Lučiny offers a rare chance to see a river behaving as it has for thousands of years, before human engineering straightened most watercourses in the region. Its proximity to central Havířov makes it easily accessible — a natural counterpoint to the surrounding urban development, popular with locals looking for a green escape close to home. The terrain is flat and well suited to a relaxed walk along the riverbank, with plenty of opportunities to observe birds and insects in their natural setting.
