About this place
Prameniště Kateřinského potoka is a small but ecologically valuable nature monument tucked away in the forests above the village of Lesná, in the Tachov district, within the Český les Nature Park. The protected area covers roughly 3.1 hectares and lies within the cadastral territory of Bažantov, about 1.5 km southeast of Lesná, at an elevation of nearly 679 metres above sea level. This is the source area of the Kateřinský potok, a stream that forms one of the headwaters of the Pfreimd river.
Why is this spot protected?
The springs area is a textbook example of the sensitive relationship between a cultivated landscape and the careful preservation of wetland spring habitats with a consistently high groundwater table. The combination of permanently saturated soil, the cool microclimate of the mountain forest, and centuries of extensive, low-intensity use of the surrounding meadows allowed vegetation typical of transitional bogs and wet meadows to develop and survive here.
What can visitors see?
The reserve is best known for its rare flora, most notably a population of orchids — plants that depend on very specific habitat conditions and are extremely sensitive to any disturbance of the local water regime. In spring, the wet meadows and boggy patches burst into a vivid yellow thanks to marsh marigold (kingcup), whose blooms are one of the most photogenic features of the reserve during the flowering season.
The other defining feature of this landscape is the presence of the European beaver. The local beaver population expanded significantly toward the end of the 20th century, and its impact on the terrain is unmistakable: visitors can spot characteristically gnawed tree trunks and trees felled by beavers throughout the area. A survey of the upper Kateřinský potok basin and its tributaries recorded more than 200 beaver dams, making this one of the more remarkable examples of natural beaver engineering in the region. These dams back up water into small pools and flooded patches, which in turn support an even richer variety of plants and animals tied to wetland and aquatic habitats.
Getting there and what to know before visiting
The reserve sits in the forests above Lesná, in a quiet, sparsely populated corner of the Český les close to the German border. It suits travellers who value silence and near-untouched nature over developed tourist infrastructure — and indeed, the lack of heavy infrastructure is part of what keeps the fragile spring ecosystem intact. Visitors are advised to stick to existing paths to avoid damaging the sensitive orchid habitats and other rare plants growing here.
Late spring is the best time to visit, when the marsh marigolds bloom and the first orchids appear, though the beaver activity makes the site interesting to explore year-round — dams and gnawed tree trunks can be observed in any season.
