The square's name carries its own social history: naming a Sabadell street "Treball" (Work) had been a demand of the local labor movement since the 1920s. It only became reality once democratic municipal governments took office decades later.

The Gràcia Neighborhood Association, formed in 1973, had already petitioned for the square during the term of mayor Josep Burrull. After a lengthy expropriation process and negotiations between the city council and the landowners, the square was formally inaugurated on May 10, 1987, under mayor Antoni Farrés.
