Pla de Santa Bàrbara

Pla de Santa Bàrbara is a small hill right in the middle of Montblanc, in the Conca de Barberà region, rising roughly twenty metres above the surrounding land. This is where the town began — settlers first gathered here, near the meeting point of the Francolí and Anguera rivers, long before the defensive walls that now frame Montblanc's skyline were ever built.

What is on the hill?

Archaeologists excavating the plateau uncovered the remains of an Iberian settlement belonging to the Cossetani people, inhabited between the 4th century BC and the 1st century AD. The digs revealed small rectangular houses arranged in a radial pattern around a centre, along with grain-storage silos — clear evidence of an organised community centuries before medieval Montblanc took shape.

In the 12th century a castle was built on the same spot, reusing stones taken from the earlier Iberian settlement, together with a small chapel beside it. Only fragments of the fortification survive today, but they explain why the hill mattered: it was a strategic point commanding the valley below.

How do you get to Pla de Santa Bàrbara?

Access is through the "El Foradot" gate in the town walls. From there, a marked path climbs toward the plateau. Just before reaching the top, a picnic spot with a wooden table and benches offers a place to rest. The route is short and does not require any climbing skill — it is a walk within the town itself, manageable for most visitors.

The town recently carried out improvement works in this part of Montblanc: the path was paved, railings and lighting were installed, and information panels now explain the site's history, from the Iberian settlement to the medieval castle.
